What is the Cyber Essentials Scheme?

The Cyber Essentials scheme is a UK Government endorsed programme supporting businesses to improve their cyber security. The size of the organisation doesn’t matter, the scheme assists companies in protecting themselves in the evolving landscape of cyber attacks.

Cyber Essentials has been developed by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), providing a solution to improving cyber security for UK organisations of any size operating in any sector. From single-person companies to large international companies.

Cyber Essentials is considered to be the first step in assuring a strengthened network for your company and protects you from 80% of the most common cyber security attacks. Cyber Essentials is a standard created by experienced experts to improve online security for the business sector.

Businesses who gain the Cyber Essentials accreditation can demonstrate their cyber security credentials to customers and clients, providing them with confidence and assurance in any business relationship.

The standard includes a prescribed set of controls that provides clear guidance on basic cyber security for organisations. It also offers them a robust platform of cyber security measures that can be utilised effectively and efficiently.

There are two different levels of the scheme:

Cyber Essentials Is an introductory level accreditation designed to outline the basic controls in place within your organisation. These controls are utilised to mitigate risks from common cyber security threats. This accreditation involves a company completing a self-assessment questionnaire online.

Cyber Essentials Plus Is a more advanced level accreditation and the highest level within the Cyber Essentials scheme. Before accreditation at this level, the introductory Cyber Essentials award must be achieved. Cyber Essential Plus is a more in-depth assessment of your organisational cyber security systems. Our cyber security experts carry out vulnerability testing on both internal and external IT infrastructure to examine the protection against cyber security attacks.
